109,000 visual creators receive a share in £5.3 million of Payback royalties

This month, DACS has begun distributing £5.3 million in royalties to 109,000 visual creators and their representatives through its annual Payback scheme.

This year marks an 18% increase in the number of artists, photographers, and illustrators receiving payments.

Our Payback service distributes money to artists, creators and their beneficiaries annually for certain reuses of their work. This could be in printed or digital publications, on TV, through photocopying, scanning and recording. It offers artists a dependable source of income, helping them cover the increasing costs of materials, studio rent, and daily living expenses.

This year’s distribution also marks the 25th anniversary of DACS' Payback scheme, which has been supporting visual creators since 1999. During this time, DACS has distributed more than £80 million to artists, photographers, and illustrators across the UK, making Payback a vital form of financial support for the creative community.

As an illustrator, sometimes work can be a little feast or famine, so any additional income stream to our businesses is always most welcome. I encourage anyone that has had work published in books, magazines and featured on TV or film, to set up a DACS account and claim your portion of the royalties that DACS work tirelessly on our behalf to collect.
