Artist and filmmaker Alia Syed joined curator and DACS Chief Executive Gilane Tawadros to discuss her expansive practice over the past 35 years.
Equally at home in the cinema or gallery setting, Syed’s experimental filmmaking deepens our understanding of cultural identity and diaspora. Set against the backdrop of life in multi-cultural Britain, Syed weaves intimate and heartfelt narratives, her elegant storytelling always alluding to broader universal themes of time and memory.
An artist with a singular vision, Syed will share details of her process - from writing to directing and sometimes even starring in her films – and reflections on her time spent across the UK. We will ask Alia how her work has enabled her to connect with her wider community and sense of self.
