Creating a Sustainable Future: Reconditioning Art and Institutional Practice

Bringing together artists, curators and entrepreneurs, this event explored how the sector can create new, more sustainable methodologies, rethink existing systems to move closer to a decarbonised arts sector, and what roles and responsibilities contemporary art practice and the arts sector at large can take in mitigating the climate crisis.

Speaker Biographies

Tom Trevor is a curator and writer on contemporary art. He is Associate Professor of Contemporary Art and Curation at the University of Exeter. Previously he was Artistic Director of The Atlantic Project in Plymouth, UK (2016-19), Guest Curator at the Whitechapel Gallery, London (2015-16), Artistic Director of the 4th Dojima River Biennale in Osaka, Japan (2014-15), curatorial consultant to the 1st ARoS Triennale in Aarhus, Denmark (2014-15), Guest Curator at the Devi Art Foundation in Delhi, India (2013-14), Director of Arnolfini in Bristol (2005-13), Associate Curator of the Art Fund International collection (2007-12), and Director of Spacex in Exeter (1999-2005).

Katrina Stamatopoulos is a Greek-Australian Artist based in London. Her interests are located amongst meanings of agency and subject, what we consider real, scientific and surreal, and how we consistently misperceive through Photography. She is particularly interested in connections made between the ways we digest food and images, their source and distribution, and the way they entwine as daily process. Her practice manifests through film photography, darkroom experimentation, chemigrams, food waste, found 16mm and 35mm film, video and bookmaking. Katrina is the Co-Founder of the Project Space EquivalentBehaviour in North London, with Wojciech Kawczyk from StorqueStudios

Annika Erikson studied Paper Conservation at UAL, Renaissance Art History in Tuscany, and the Classics in Greece, before working in conservation and collection care at St Paul’s Cathedral, the Royal Horticultural Society, and Tate, where she got the idea in 2010 to create a mobile digital tool to streamline and create an industry standard in condition reports and conservation documentation. After opening a new conservation studio for John Jones, she became an entrepreneur and founded Articheck in 2013.
