From Sunday 22 to Tuesday 24 September 2024, representatives from across the Cultural and Creative Industries will come together at the Labour Party Conference in Liverpool to showcase - and advocate for - the huge value and impact of the creative sector in the United Kingdom, and beyond.

DACS’ Head of Policy and International Reema Selhi will join the panel Income for Creatives, on Monday 23rd September, 11.45am-12.45pm, alongside Isabelle Doran, CEO at the Association of Photographers and Paula Orrell, National Director at the Contemporary Visual Arts Network.

From low pay, late payments, and precarious contracts, to rising studio rents, reductions in funding streams, and the rise of generative AI, many challenges stand in the way of artists’ creativity and careers. This panel will explore how alternative funding models and policy approaches can support income for creatives, and improve the visibility of creative portfolio careers in the eyes of the Government.

Organised by Creative UK, the Cultural and Creative Industries Pavilion will be home to three-days of policy-led discussions and debates, alongside performances and presentations.

Topics to be discussed include, why who makes culture matters, rethinking funding models, navigating the age of AI, and Britain’s position on the world stage - both as a global exporter of goods and services as well as wielding soft power.

The programme’s content will explore why the Cultural and Creative Industries should be central to Labour’s policymaking, and how the sector can tangibly drive inclusive growth across the UK.

DACS has published 3 key policy recommendations for the Government to better support visual artists:

  • Establish the Smart Fund
  • Include visual artists in considered regulation of AI
  • Establish and appoint a Freelancer Commissioner.
