King’s Speech highlights workers’ rights and AI regulation

In today’s King’s Speech, HRH King Charles III laid out the policy commitments of the newly formed Labour government.

The 2024 King’s Speech outlines the draft laws which Labour plan to introduce in the coming months. These include bills on workers' rights, housing and planning and House of Lords reform.

The Government has committed to “making work pay and will legislate to introduce a New Deal for Working People to ban exploitative practices and enhance employment rights.”

It is essential that these laws and protections extend to freelancers, which includes almost all visual artists and makes up a significant proportion of workers in the creative industries. We must ensure that creative work pays, and pays fairly.

Further, commitments to “establish appropriate legislation to place requirements on those working to develop the most powerful artificial intelligence models” are promising. This legislation must extend to the protection of rightsholders, and AI models must respect existing copyright law.
