Visual Arts Manifesto raised in the House of Lords

Today the House of Lords debated Creating Opportunities: Education, Early Years and Health Care as part of the Humble Address, which responds to the new Government’s plans as laid out in the King’s Speech on Wednesday 17th July.

Members debated the reforms to education, including arts subjects, and the ways in which the new government can widen opportunity, including within the creative industries.

I ask the government to look at the recommendations in the Visual Arts Manifesto, led by DACS. One recommendation is the appointment of a Freelancer Commissioner for the arts, to look at their rights and levels of pay. It is good the government is addressing workers’ rights, and this should be a part of that.

DACS supports calls for a Freelancer Commissioner, to advocate for the needs and interests of freelance visual artists and creative workers across government departments, as recommended by the Culture, Media, and Sport Committee in their Creator Remuneration report.

The Freelancer Commissioner is one of the key policy asks laid out by 23 visual arts organisations including DACS, CVAN and a-n in the Visual Arts Manifesto.
